The katana from hell: tested on a thousand bodies #Terressens

💡 Did you know?

The katana from hell: tested on a thousand bodies

In feudal Japan, the quality of a katana was not left to chance. To assess a blade's cutting power, tameshigiri was practiced: tests on bales of straw, bamboo... or sometimes, more sinisterly, on human corpses. Some legends mention katanas capable of slicing through up to five stacked bodies in a single stroke. The most extraordinary of these - or those purporting to be so - bore special engravings on the blade, mentioning the number of bodies sliced in the test.
While tales of swords capable of slicing through "a thousand bodies" are undoubtedly exaggerations, they bear witness to one reality: the katana was more than a weapon. It embodied deadly perfection, the honor of the blacksmith... and the terror of his enemies.

Buying guide: How to choose the perfect katana for you

We understand the importance of choosing the katana that perfectly matches your needs and preferences. With a wide range of styles, materials and features available, it can sometimes be difficult to make the right choice. This article aims to guide you through the selection process, highlighting the crucial aspects to consider.

Blade materials:
Blade material is one of the most important factors to consider. Carbon steel blades are renowned for their exceptional sharpness and durability. Opt for high-quality steel such as tamahagane or damascus steel for optimum performance.

Blade length:
Blade length is a crucial feature that determines katana use. Shorter katanas are ideal for maneuverability, while longer blades offer extended reach. Choose according to your preferred fighting style or intended use, whether martial arts, decoration or cutting.

Blade type:
Katanas can have different blade types, such as straight or curved. A curved blade is traditionally preferred, as it offers better cutting efficiency and classic aesthetics. However, the choice depends on your personal preferences.

Tsuka (handle) and Tsuba (guard):
The katana's handle and guard contribute to its balance and comfort. Choose a tsuka that matches the size of your hand for optimum grip. The tsuba can be simple or ornate, depending on your aesthetic tastes.

Sheath (saya):
The sheath is not only a protective element for the blade, but also a decorative feature. Choose a saya that matches your personal style, taking into account quality and finish.

Choosing the perfect katana depends on your individual preferences, intended use and budget. As leaders in the field, our extensive collection offers a variety of options meeting high standards of quality and authenticity. Explore our catalog to find the katana that will become the centerpiece of your collection or the ideal companion for your martial training.
