Shirasaya and shikomitsue

The shirasaya (白鞘) is a protective mount for a Japanese sword blade. In fact, when these were not mounted as a katana (when leaving the forge, in peacetime or when the katana had suffered significant damage), they were protected by a conservation sheath (saya 鞘) (shira 白). The shirasaya mounting was therefore not intended for use as a weapon. The Shikomitsue (仕込み杖 training cane) and a form of sword cane that television and cinema have revived in films and TV series such as Zatoïchi (座頭市, Zatōichi).
