The tantō (短刀) is Japan's smallest saber. Its slightly curved blade measures less than 30 cm and has only one cutting edge (a special feature of the saber).

Its mount is generally identical to that of a katana or wakizashi, the two other sabers characteristic of feudal Japanese samurai. It is the equivalent of a dagger. The tantō or wakizashi could be used in the Seppuku ritual (切腹 also called Hara-Kiri in the West), a singular suicide reserved for samurai or the aristocratic caste. It involved cutting open the abdomen. Imported from China in the XIIᵗʰ century, the practice officially disappeared in 1868 (Meiji Restoration).

The master blacksmith who gave me life would have chosen the best ore to transform it, after weeks of hard labor into a fine blade. Polished, razor-sharp, I was then entrusted to a samurai who took part in the Battle of Sekigahara (関ヶ原の戦い), in 1600.

How do I care for a katana blade?

Maintenance of a sword or saber is necessary to prevent oxidation (rust). Used oil must be removed and replaced entirely with a film of new oil.
