The Knights Templar: the architectural revolution of the round churches

At the heart of the XII^e century, the Knights Templar defied Romanesque canons: in 1185, they consecrated the Temple Church, Londoncircular nave copied from the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem.
This rotunda, one of England's earliest Gothic structures, allows knights to remain in the saddle during mass. The same boldness Tomar, Portugal (illustration): the charola octagonal (circa 1160) incorporates an ambulatory where people turn on horseback around the altar, reminiscent of pilgrim liturgy.
These centered plans, both spiritual and defensive, symbolized the union of the earthly and heavenly temples, an avant-garde architectural manifesto that left its mark on medieval Europe.
