Jacques de Molay fascinates. Of the twenty-three Grand Masters who succeeded each other at the head of the Order of the Temple between 1120 and 1312, he is without doubt the only one whose memory has been preserved by the public. Maurice Druon's Les Rois maudits immortalized him, and recent media, from The Da Vinci Code to Assassin's Creed, have spread his name around the world. Yet, while he is firmly anchored in myth, Jacques de Molay has hardly captivated historians. Appearing in the XIIᵉ century on battlefields and tournament fields to serve as signs of recognition for combatants, the use of coats of arms quickly spread to the lordly class. Subsequently, it gradually spread to women, prelates, burghers and even, in some regions, craftsmen and peasants. A little later, the practice spread to civil and religious communities. By the end of the Middle Ages, the whole of European society had or could make use of coats of arms. At once signs of identity, marks of possession and decorative ornaments, they took their place on numerous objects, works of art, buildings and monuments. Lyon, November 15, 1305. Philip the Fair, the powerful sovereign, attends the coronation of Bertrand de Got as Pope Clement V. As he leaves the Abbey of Saint Juste, the new pope is acclaimed by the people of Lyon. He is the tenth French pope in history. A huge, joyful crowd has gathered on the path of the procession through the city. But suddenly, a huge wall collapsed under the weight and agitation of the people who had come to see the new pope! It's a catastrophe, with lifeless bodies entangled in rubble, dust and debris. The king was unharmed, but the pope's horse reared up, causing him to topple over, leaving him only wounded! Eleven people died as a result of this accident, including the Duke of Brittany and the Pope's younger brother.
This dramatic event opened the pontificate like a bad omen, with Philip the Fair showing neither respite nor indulgence towards his bulky rival. During the first six years of his pontificate, the pope more or less resisted the injunctions of the French king - who demanded, for example, that his late adversary Boniface VIII be condemned by a council, and that his advisor Guillaume de Nogaret, the man who had arrested the former pope at Anagni, be absolved by the Church in a special bull! Philip the Fair, with his somewhat secretive personality, was as cruel as he was determined...
The king also got Clement V to condemn the Order of the Temple and proclaim its dissolution. Faced with the confessions of the order's leaders, extracted under torture by the king's investigation, the pope could not prevent Jacques de Molay and his companions from being burned at the stake. Thus were sacrificed the Knights Templar, who had so fervently served the kingdom and Christianity by leading the great Crusades to the Holy Land.
