Excalibur

Excalibur

Excalibur is the legendary sword of King Arthur, King of the Bretons. Written in the Middle Ages, Arthurian legends¹ portray King Arthur as invincible because he carries this sword with magical powers. Reputedly unbreakable and capable of slicing through any material, Excalibur comes with a scabbard that protects the wearer from injury.

What is the legend of Excalibur?

Have you ever heard of Excalibur? The legendary magic sword attributed to King Arthur, the sword capable of cutting through any material? The Excalibur legend has been adapted, transformed and derived many times throughout popular culture, but first let's talk about its origins.

First mentioned under this name by the French poet Chrétien de Troyes, the sword has other names such as Chastiefol, Caledfwlch(kalètvoulr) in Welsh, Calibourne and Excalibor. There are two possible origins for this sword: either it was freed from a rock by Arthur, then very young, while the throne of Brittany was empty, as told by Robert de Boron. Or Arthur receives it from the mythical Lady of the Lake, as told by Thomas Malory nearly 200 years later. When recognized as legitimate, the sword gives its holder considerable power and the ability to cut through anything, while the scabbard confers invincibility.

Excalibur is the subject of numerous popular works. These include, of course, the "Kaamelott" series and Disney's 1963 animated film "Merlin the Enchanter". But more or less subtle references can be found everywhere. It is the main theme of the eponymous album by the metal band Grave Digger. It can be found in the series "Charmed" or the TV show "Fort Boyard", where it is a test of strength. It's also the sword of Shura, Golden Knight Capricorn in "Saint Seiya", or the insufferable character in the manga "Soul Eater". And in video games, it can be found in " The Legend of Zelda ", " Fire Emblem ", " Castlevania ", " Soul Calibur ", " Final Fantasy " - in short, Excalibur is one of the most popular magic swords.

The halo of mystery surrounding the Middle Ages the knight's sword is a response to an ancient mythology echoed in chansons de geste, Arthurian novels and Scandinavian sagas, as well as in iconography and archaeology. The sword is certainly a functional tool, a technical feat and an objet d'art, but it is also an animated artefact which, exuding a supernatural force, renders the knight invincible. The fighter, the blacksmith and the loving fairies who pass on their swords are at the heart of this book, which explores the mentalities of a bygone era whose tales continue to inspire heroic fantasy today. The sword is also the sign of the knight's social preponderance and the symbol of war, which he reserves exclusively for himself. It embodies all the intellectual abstractions surrounding the use of legitimate violence in society.
