Zatoïchi (座頭市 Zatōichi)

Zatoïchi (座頭市 Zatōichi)

Zatoïchi means "blind Ichi" in the most pejorative sense. Indeed, Ichi (the hero's first name) is a member of the blind guild, at the very bottom of the ladder.

In the heart of 19thᵉ century Japan, at the end of the Edo period, Zatoïchi is a blind masseur but also a former Yakuza (ヤクザ Japanese mafia), practicing swordsmanship with exceptional dexterity. Having developed his other senses, he plays on his blindness by surprising his opponents, against whom his sense of humor sometimes takes on as much importance as his sword. His humble appearance suggests that he is easy prey, but this is not the case. The character is surprising in his ability to live off his winnings at the dice game, having a very questionable past, but also in his ability to defend the underprivileged by respecting his own code of honor, which is similar to the Bushidō.

The TV series consists of 26 episodes shot between 1962 and 1989. It was adapted for the screen in 2003 by Japanese filmmaker Takeshi Kitano.

Zatoichi: the blind swordsman inspired by historical events

Zatoïchi, the famous blind swordsman of Japanese cinema, is a fictional character created by novelist Kan Shimozawa in 1948. He plays a blind itinerant masseur, a member of the Guild of the Blind (Tōdōza), active during the Edo period (1603-1868). This guild, established in the XIVᵉ century, brought together blind practitioners practicing trades such as music, massage and acupuncture.
Although Zatoïchi is a literary creation, it is inspired by this historical reality. The character, played by Shintarō Katsu in a series of films and a TV series, is renowned for his exceptional mastery of the sword, despite his blindness. He uses a cane concealing a blade, and his adventures often bring him face to face with injustices that he strives to correct.
Zatoichi symbolizes resilience and justice, and his character has left a lasting mark on Japanese popular culture, inspiring many later works.

Very good but
Zatoichi's Aiguchi is great! The only drawback is that the saya arrived dirty, and the blade comes out with this dirt. Unpleasant to have to clean something you bought new.
