Medieval daggers, knights' daggers

Medieval dagger, medieval daggers

A dagger is a short sword (or dagger) used since Antiquity. It's a short bladed weapon, generally one-third the length of a sword.

Most daggers are double-edged. Like the first swords, daggers were first made of copper or meteoritic metal (metal extracted from a meteorite), then of steel. Famous daggers include Tutankhamun's, forged from meteorite metal and found in his tomb in 1925. Closer to home, Carnwennan (or Carnwenhau, "little white handle") is King Arthur's dagger in the Welsh Arthurian legends.

The medieval dagger: the discreet weapon of knights

In the Middle Ages, the dagger was more than just a simple dagger: it was the weapon of choice for close combat and coup de grâce. Worn on the belt, often on the right-hand side, it completed the knight's arsenal, ready to be quickly drawn.
Among the emblematic models, the rouelle dagger is distinguished by its two metal disks forming guard and pommel, offering a secure grip even with gauntlets. As for the "couillettes" dagger, it features a two-lobed guard, hence its evocative name.
Some daggers, like the Misericordia, were designed to pierce gaps in armor, making it possible to finish off a fallen opponent. Others, such as the Swiss baselard, combined aesthetics and effectiveness, becoming popular with mercenaries.
Beyond their lethal function, these daggers were also symbols of status and honor, reflecting the skill and bravery of their wearer.
