Tachis for collection and decoration

The tachi is a Japanese saber, ancestor of the katana, mainly used until the XIIIᵗʰ century. It is a jōkotō (上古刀), a term for swords and sabers predating the middle of the Heian era (794-1185). Its 70 cm blade is more curved than that of a katana. This curvature is stronger on the first third of the blade. The handle (tsuka 柄) can also be curved or straight, depending on the era.

The tachi differs from the katana mainly in the way it is mounted and carried. In place of the sageo (下緒), the saya is partially protected by a braid. This has a double attachment (two rings) that allows the weapon to be worn loosely (suspended) from the belt. A cavalry weapon par excellence, the tachi is worn with the edge of the blade downwards.

Like the Western sword, the tachi had two vocations over time. It served as a weapon (jintachi, war tachi) but was also a symbol of prestige or ceremony (飾太刀 kazaritachi, decorative tachi).
