I was born many centuries ago, long before the Heian era (794-1185). I was forged, not for the purpose of fighting, but for the honor of my master. I'm a kazaritachi (飾り太刀) or decorative tachi. I accompanied my master to the imperial court. I symbolize power. I don't need to get out of my saya (鞘 scabbard) to impress. My mount is discreet today, but back then it was extremely refined, with gold and pearls.
The centuries have passed. I've taken part in many political and military episodes, but I've never been on the battlefield. True power does not lie in violence, as the great Chinese strategist Sun Tzu wrote in The Art of War The best skill is not to win a hundred victories in a hundred battles, but rather to defeat the enemy without fighting".

From tachi (downward cutting) to katana (upward cutting)

Before the XVᵉ century, the sword tachi was hanging, cutting edge downwards a legacy of fighting on horseback. In those days Muromachi, l'uchigatana/katana is a must: slip it on cutting edge upwards in the obi, with a special frame (koshirae). This style of carrying facilitates drawing and cutting in a single movement, while adapting to urban life and the armament of infantrymen. The Met's collections and those of Japanese museums clearly depict this contrast in wear, which has become a visual marker between tachi and katana.
