History Rendez-vous

Contrary to what is portrayed in films and video games, not all medieval castles were gloomy, cold and poorly lit. Certainly, primitive keeps were austere, but by the XIIᵉ century, seigneurial residences were incorporating surprising amenities: colorful stained-glass windows, wall hangings to insulate against the cold, large fireplaces, private latrines, and even hanging gardens!
The château was as much a stronghold as a symbol of prestige. As such, lords took great care to decorate their homes, particularly in the reception rooms and private chapels. Some fortresses, such as Château de Coucy and Château de Pierrefonds, boasted advanced comforts for their time, combining military defenses with residential luxury.
