Samurai & Katana

Where to buy a good katana?

At www.terressens.com, you'll find sharpened katanas for training, iaïtōs (unsharpened training katanas), and also decorative katanas.

Which is the best Katana?

The quality of a katana depends essentially on its blade. Several factors play a part in the characteristics of a katana blade: the steel(s) used, the type of forging (homogeneous, composite, laminated), the heat treatment (which brings hardness to all parts of the blade), polishing and sharpening. You'll find more information in our article " Katana metallurgy glossary ".

What's the best steel for a Katana?

Japanese tradition uses a special technique to produce steel from a ferruginous sand, Satetsu (砂鉄). A low-temperature furnace (Tatara 鑪) produces a very high-quality steel, Tamahagane (玉鋼).
To find out more, please refer to our article "A katana's metallurgy glossary".

What's the name of a Japanese sword?

The three main Japanese swords are the katana (刀), the wakizashi (脇差) and the tantō (短刀), from the longest to the shortest length. The katana and wakizashi were worn on the belt by samurai (侍), warriors of feudal Japan. There are many variations, with temporary mounts like the shirasaya (白鞘), or with a long handle like the naginata (薙刀).

Before we carry out the personalization, we'll send you a copy of the production sheet, which will serve as a "good to print".
Allow one to two additional days (not including technical discussions to define your project) to complete the engraving.

The Middle Ages and the Knights Templar

What is the Templar motto?

The motto of the Order of the Temple is: " Non nobis Domine, non nobis, sed Nomini Tuo da Gloriam " (Not for us, Lord, not for us, but for the glory of your name). This hymn, a symbol of humility, is taken from Psalm 115 (113B), attributed to David.

What is a Templar sword?

No Templar sword is known to exist. Time has taken its toll on this major symbol of the Knights Templar. It is unlikely, however, that Templar knights used any specific type of sword. Their vocation was to serve the Order, not pomp and pageantry.
Read the article "Il a découvert l'épée d'un Templier au fond d'une mystérieuse grotte" (Ulyces, June 27, 2019)
We offer contemporary creations inspired by Templar symbols (seal, cross, motto...). Our collectible Templar swords are intended for decorative purposes. Our range offorged swords includes several Templar and knightly-inspired models.

Are medieval swords sharp?

The purpose of a sword is to cut, pierce and parry. Pragmatically speaking, few swords were operational for these three functions. As the cutting edge dusts with practice, as does the point of the sword, the vast majority of swords - ancient, medieval or more modern - had a cutting edge more akin to a chisel than a razor. Medieval swords could be sharpened more towards the tip of the blade, to a length of one to one-and-a-half palms (one to two palm-widths).
Our reconstructed swords, whether decorative or forged, are not sharpened.

How do you engrave a sword or dagger?

#Terressens offers a personalized engraving service. Select yoursword or dagger (forged or collectible) and add the engraving service. Once your order has been registered and validated, our atelie will contact you (by e-mail, instant messaging, sms, telephone or videoconference, depending on your preferences) to define and formalize your engraving project. Before we carry out the personalization, we'll send you a copy of the production sheet, which will serve as a "print order".
Allow one to two additional days (not including technical discussions to define your project) to complete the engraving.

How to maintain the steel of a sword or dagger?

If you want to protect the metal from oxidation, you need to maintain the blade regularly, as well as the unprotected parts (guard and pommel). Regularity will depend on your use and storage conditions. If the blade remains in its sheath and in a healthy environment (cool and dry), you won't need to maintain the metal more frequently than quarterly. If you use it for demonstrations or combat in a damp environment, for example, it's best to maintain the sword after each use.
As for oil, we generally use linseed oil. It protects the blade without making it sticky, and dries more slowly than conventional mechanical oil.
In the event of surface oxidation, you can use polishing paste, as described in the article : Restoring an oxidized sword or katana blade.
