Japanese sword sets: katana, wakizashi and tantō #Terressens

Katana, wakizashi and tantō

Three emblematic swords characterize the equipment of the samurai, the warrior of feudal Japan: the katana (刀), the wakizashi (脇差) and the tantō (短刀). They measure around one, two and three shaku (1 尺 = 30.303 cm) respectively. The traditional manufacture of Japanese swords involves a particular ore (玉鋼 Tamahagane), a special forge using one or more steels, optimal heat treatment to reconcile the hardness of the steel and the suppleness of the blade, meticulous manual sharpening and rigorous polishing.

The two long swords, katana and wakizashi form a daishō (大小). These bladed weapons are not the only ones used by samurai. The bow, the very long sword, the naginata... and many other weapons by nature or purpose (use of an agrarian tool) were used.

The daishō, the samurai's twin soul

In feudal Japan, the daishō (literally "large and small") designated the pair of swords carried exclusively by samurai: the long katana and the shorter wakizashi. This combination was not arbitrary. It symbolized their social status and code of honor: strength, loyalty and duty.
The katana, feared sharpness and ceremonial tool, embodied the nobility of combat. The wakizashi, often used in confined spaces or for seppuku rituals (ritual suicide), represented extreme loyalty, even unto death.

Omote wa rei, ura wa jutsu: the art of the visible and invisible

In Japanese martial arts, this maxim (表は礼、裏は術) sums up a profound philosophy: what you show(omote) is etiquette, respect, politeness; what you hide(ura) is technique, strategy, real effectiveness.
In traditional budō, omote techniques are taught first: they are visible, codified, often demonstrative. But behind this façade lies the ura: more subtle, sometimes secret techniques passed on to advanced disciples.
This duality reflects the Japanese spirit: the importance of form and respect for social codes, but also the awareness that true mastery lies in what is hidden. In martial practice, this translates into a progression from surface to depth, from appearance to essence.

Very satisfied with the product ordered
Very satisfied with the product ordered (tanto) + engraving. The person with whom I exchanged e-mails (even on a Sunday!) was very responsive, listened to our request and advised us. Ordered on Saturday, exchanged by e-mail on Sunday, engraved on Monday and also sent. Product arrived on Wednesday, superbly packaged! The tanto and the engraving are magnificent! It's for giving and I can't wait for the person to discover their gift 🤗
I 100% recommend Terressens! Thanks again!
