I'm named after the Japanese dragon, Ryū, which has no wings, short clawed legs and a head with horns or antlers. It's also the name given to modern martial arts schools.
I'm the key to martial arts training such as aikido (合気道 aikidō, the way of energy concordance), iaido (居合道 iaidō, the art of drawing the sword), jodo (杖道 jōdō, the way of the stick), kendo (剣道 / 劍道 kendō, the way of the sword), kenjutsu (剣術, the technique of the sword) and ninjutsu (忍術, the art of perseverance). Made from light-colored wood, just like real katanas but without the sharp edge, I accompany practitioners in their progress. Not only is the mastery of movement in space part of the training required to master the various sword arts, but I can also be a real combat weapon, as was the case for Miyamoto Musashi. His duel with Sasaki Kojirō remains famous. Legend may have overtaken history, but of the sixty or so duels in which Miyamoto Musashi successfully participated, a large proportion were won with a bokken, against a real saber with a sharp blade.

Musashi: the wooden blade that conquered steel

On the morning of April 13, 1612, legendary swordsman Miyamoto Musashi landed on the island of Ganryū-jima to face his formidable rival Sasaki Kojiro. On the boat leading up to the duel, Musashi hastily fashioned a long bokken from an oar. He deliberately arrived late, throwing Kojiro off balance. In the first exchange, the unexpected reach of his wooden sword enabled him to deliver a fatal blow, reportedly shattering his opponent's steel nodachi. This stunning victory is a reminder that strategy, psychology and technical mastery can triumph over a reputedly superior weapon.
