Katana, sword of Japanese samurai warriors (note the ripples drawn by the tempering line or hamon 刃文)

Sharpened katanas, samurai swords

The katana (刀) is a Japanese sword. It is curved and sharpened on one side only, the edge of the blade. Its blade measures over 60 cm (2 shaku; 1 shaku (尺) = 30.303 cm). It is the favorite and symbolic weapon of the samurai, the warrior of medieval Japan.

Unlike its ancestor, the tachi (太刀), its curvature is weaker, adapted to the draw of a standing man, with the cutting edge upwards (conversely, the tachi was used by horsemen, with an appropriate carriage and draw, with the cutting edge downwards).

The magic curve of the katana: when forging becomes science #Terressens

💡 Did you know?

The magic curve of the katana: when forging becomes science

The katana 's famous curvature is not just a matter of style: it's the result of engineering that's as elegant as it is effective. During forging, the master smith applies a thinner layer of clay to the cutting edge than to the back of the blade. During tempering, the cutting edge cools faster, creating a harder structure (martensite), while the back remains softer. This thermal shock causes internal tension... and gives rise to the sword's natural curvature. The result is a perfect balance between cutting power, strength and flexibility.
The katana thus becomes a living weapon, born of fire and intelligence, as deadly as it is harmonious.
