Everything about me is harmonious, from the dark blue of my ito and sageo to my saya, on which is depicted the one whose name I bear, Ryūjin (龍神), the God of the ocean. My samurai master wanted it this way, because his origins, close to the coast, had bathed him, literally and figuratively, in the ocean and its legends. Speaking of legends, my master's relates that he stayed in the Ryūgū-jō (竜宮城 / 龍宮城), Ryūjin's underwater palace. It was here that he learned to wield the sword, saved by the Dragon following a storm that had washed away his frail fishing boat. From this trade, my master then became a master of arms, able to handle with exceptional dexterity all kinds of bladed weapons such as the katana, the wakizashi and the tantō, the three swords that accompanied fighters in their feats of arms.
Ryujin is the father of the splendid goddess Otohime. She married the hunter prince Hoori. Japan's first emperor, Jimmu, is considered the grandson of Otohime and Hoori. I'm therefore named after Ryujin, the Dragon King, as well as one of the ancestors of the Japanese imperial dynasty.
