Since September 6, 2013, new legal provisions stemming from the March 6, 2012 law have come into force. These new rules have strengthened criminal penalties against the perpetrators of weapons offenses and introduced a new classification.
Edged weapons such as katanas, swords, daggers and knives are classified in category D. The purchase and possession of these weapons is unrestricted. They may not be carried or transported without legitimate reason. If transported, the weapon must not be "directly" usable. It must be securely packed in a case or container, preferably with a padlock or other protective system.

Owning a katana in Spain is legal, as long as the owner is of legal age and it's for collection or decoration. Beware: a sharpened model falls into the category of regulated edged weapons. This is clearly defined by the Weapons Regulations (Real Decreto 137/1993). Carrying in public is forbidden, except for legitimate reasons (sport, exhibition, transport to home).

Japan, March 28, 1876: the Haitōrei edict puts an end to the public carrying of swords

Visit Haitōrei from March 28, 1876 (Dajōkan, procl. no. 38) prohibits the public carrying of swords, except by the military, police and those in full uniform. Entitled "大礼服並軍人警察官吏等制服着用ノ外帯刀禁止ノ件", the edict was part of a policy of modernization: end of statutory privileges, conscription (1873), abandonment of the distinctive signs of the warrior order. The main penalty was the seizure of weapons. This turning point fuelled resentment among former samurai (shizoku) and preceded the uprisings of 1876 (Shinpūren, then Akizuki and Hagi).
