¹ Supplied without dragon skull

My guard (鍔 tsuba) preserves the memory of my origins. I served a masterless samurai, a rōnin (浪人). Having stepped outside the hierarchy by refusing to renounce his membership of a fallen clan, my master had gone into exile in the mountains. For years, he defended the merchants and peasants in the region against the Shōgun (将軍) hordes who slaughtered everything in their path. But what most frightened the populace was a dragon, lurking in the limestone galleries by day, coming out to hunt at night.
So my master chose me a new mount, blood-colored, with a tsuba forming two dragon claws. This is the one I've kept over the centuries. In the half-light, he entered the dragon's lair and planted me in the top of its skull. The fight was brief. My master sliced off the claws, gouged out the eyes and reached the heart of the fantastic beast. At the end of the fight, my master withdrew from the world, touched by the look in his eyes that life was leaving. He had understood, too late, that the dragon didn't hunt for pleasure, but to protect its offspring. He placed me on the dragon's head and disappeared.

When the dragon summoned rain on the samurai's blade

In medieval Japan, the dragon wasn't just a mythical creature; it symbolized rain, protection and authority. Master silversmiths of the Gotō school, active in the XVIᵉ, chiseled sword mounts adorned with "thirty dragons", intended for high-ranking warriors. Zen monk-painters, for their part, popularized the Dragon-Tiger duo; in Sesson Shūkei, the dragon rises from the clouds and calls down rain, an image as conducive to military campaigns as it is allegorical. Finally, the great Tenryū-ji temple, founded in 1339 by the shogun Ashikaga Takauji, embodies this union between faith, power and the dragon symbol. Tsuba engravings, maedate from kabuto to ink screens... the dragon is everywhere, the faithful companion of blades and prayers.

Legislation

Since September 6, 2013, new legal provisions stemming from the March 6, 2012 law have come into force. These new rules have strengthened criminal penalties against weapons offenders and introduced a new classification.
Katanas, swords, daggers and knives are now classified in category D. The purchase and possession of these weapons are unrestricted. In principle, they may not be carried or transported without legitimate reason. If transported, the weapon must not be "directly" usable. It must be securely packed in a case or container, preferably with a padlock or other protective system.
