Fish: the secret trump card of Lenten knights

There was more to the chivalric diet than rare roasts. Isotopic signatures on the skeletons of medieval warriors and nobles show a high intake of marine proteins: salted herring, cod... Individuals buried with weapons and rich finery, markers of status, show the most enriched values. This predilection can be explained by the 140 or so "lean" days imposed by the Church; the elite, better supplied by Hanseatic merchant networks, respected Lent without giving up calories. Fish thus became a sign of piety and prestige on the knights' table.

Not all medieval castles were cold and dark #Terressens

💡 Did you know?

Not all castles were cold and dark!

Contrary to what is portrayed in films and video games, not all medieval castles were gloomy, cold and poorly lit. Certainly, primitive keeps were austere, but by the XIIᵉ century, seigneurial residences were incorporating surprising amenities: colorful stained-glass windows, wall hangings to insulate against the cold, large fireplaces, private latrines, and even hanging gardens!
The château was as much a stronghold as a symbol of prestige. As such, lords took great care to decorate their homes, particularly in the reception rooms and private chapels. Some fortresses, such as Château de Coucy and Château de Pierrefonds, boasted advanced comforts for their time, combining military defenses with residential luxury.

💡 Did you know?

Yes, some Templars were... married!

Contrary to the image of the knight-monk entirely devoted to celibacy, the Primitive rule of the Order (article 52) states that "a married man may be received among the brothers, with the consent of his wife, on condition that he bequeaths a portion of his property to the Temple". These brothers, known as colleagues or donatsThey wear a black or brown cope (not the white coat worn by knights) and perform logistical or administrative functions in European commanderies.
The minutes of the Process contra Templarios (1307-1312) cite several married sergeants, reminding us that the Order knew how to adapt to social realities without abandoning its discipline. A useful reminder: the Temple was also a fundamentally pragmatic institution, open to the laity... and sometimes to couples!
