Although I was forged after my two big sisters, the katana and wakizashi blades, I carry the same symbolism of fairness, dear to our samurai master. Justice was his raison d'être throughout his life. Having avenged the blacksmith who gave birth to the first two blades, our master-at-arms chose to complete his equipment with a third, smaller blade. Our bent and folded steel - what you now call damascus forging - is part of our identity, along with our black and blood-red frame. Beware of those who create imbalance and inequality. With Katana, Editions Paquet presents us with a collection of short stories that immerse us in the world of the samurai, in feudal Japan, at a time when the sword is the law. It's with great pleasure that we read four stories. All share a common thread: the Katana, which gives this one-shot its name. Nevertheless, each story has its own subtleties, and in the end, several themes are tackled: Revenge with "The Clan", sacrifice with "Companions in Arms", feudalism with "Betrayal" and courage with "The Bridge".
Each story deals with a different element of the samurai's image, while at the same time giving us a detailed and very accurate portrait of Japanese society at the time. For my part, I was particularly taken by the first story. Particularly dark, it lets us witness the fierce hatred between samurai and ninja, where we discover that sometimes a man's cruelty can reach unparalleled heights... No one can remain indifferent to the conclusion of this novella...
Action is the order of the day in this story: numerous battles and duels punctuate the work, much to the delight of chanbara fans. But despite the omnipresent violence, the title always retains a poetic side, so much so that even war and death take on an aesthetic and lyrical finery. This is undoubtedly due in part to the meticulous graphic style of the inspired Khato. Each plate is a feast for the eyes, with an ethereal, almost photographic beauty. All this is further enhanced by a real concern for expressiveness, often characterized by striking looks! Quite simply, it's easy to get lost in the detail of some of the plates... A real treat!
Paquet's work on this title is equal to its intrinsic quality: this is a very fine work we have in our hands. The publisher also points out that the paper used in the manufacture of Katana comes from sustainably managed forests... When quality rhymes with ecology, there's no reason to deprive yourself!
A historical fresco tinged with action and poetry, Katana is an extremely high quality comic book, with a masterful script and particularly meticulous graphics. I highly recommend it!

Legislation

Since September 6, 2013, new legal provisions stemming from the March 6, 2012 law have come into force. These new rules have strengthened criminal penalties against weapons offenders and introduced a new classification.
Katanas, swords, daggers and knives are now classified in category D. The purchase and possession of these weapons are unrestricted. In principle, they may not be carried or transported without legitimate reason. If transported, the weapon must not be "directly" usable. It must be securely packed in a case or container, preferably with a padlock or other protective system.
