I was born in a bloodbath. Renowned but discreet, the blacksmith who gave birth to me was a victim of his own success. Brigands robbed him while he was finishing forging me. Having no mount at the time, they paid no attention to me resting on the polishing base. But when the samurai master for whom I was destined discovered the forfeit, he found a new craftsman to create my blood-red mount. Then he set off in search of the thieves. One by one, he found them all, in hiding, sometimes with new identities. None escaped.
I've kept my red and black mount. My destiny remains attached to fairness. I'm an extension of the samurai's arm, which I use to slice up his opponents and deliver justice.

With Katana, Editions Paquet presents us with a collection of short stories that immerse us in the world of the samurai, in feudal Japan, at a time when the sword is the law. It's with great pleasure that we read four stories. All share a common thread: the Katana, which gives this one-shot its name. Nevertheless, each story has its own subtleties, and in the end, several themes are tackled: Revenge with "The Clan", sacrifice with "Companions in Arms", feudalism with "Betrayal" and courage with "The Bridge".
Each story deals with a different element of the samurai's image, while at the same time giving us a detailed and very accurate portrait of Japanese society at the time. For my part, I was particularly taken by the first story. Particularly dark, it lets us witness the fierce hatred between samurai and ninja, where we discover that sometimes a man's cruelty can reach unparalleled heights... No one can remain indifferent to the conclusion of this novella...
Action is the order of the day in this story: numerous battles and duels punctuate the work, much to the delight of chanbara fans. But despite the omnipresent violence, the title always retains a poetic side, so much so that even war and death take on an aesthetic and lyrical finery. This is undoubtedly due in part to the meticulous graphic style of the inspired Khato. Each plate is a feast for the eyes, with an ethereal, almost photographic beauty. All this is further enhanced by a real concern for expressiveness, often characterized by striking looks! Quite simply, it's easy to get lost in the detail of some of the plates... A real treat!
Paquet's work on this title is equal to its intrinsic quality: this is a very fine work we have in our hands. The publisher also points out that the paper used in the manufacture of Katana comes from sustainably managed forests... When quality rhymes with ecology, there's no reason to deprive yourself!
A historical fresco tinged with action and poetry, Katana is an extremely high quality comic book, with a masterful script and particularly meticulous graphics. I highly recommend it!

Maintenance kit

Maintenance of a sword or saber is necessary to prevent oxidation (rust). Old oil must be removed and replaced by a film of new oil. The maintenance kit is composed of several elements:
Microfiber cloth: for cleaning, spreading oil and polishing the blade.
Uchiko: a ball of finely ground chalk (chalk powder) wrapped in a ball of cloth. Intended for cleaning the blade's surface, the powder passes through the wrapping when tapped, allowing it to be sprinkled over the blade's steel.
Oil: applied as a thin film, it protects against oxidation.
Mukugi(x 2): pins (bamboo dowels 目釘) that hold the blade and handle (tsuka 柄) together.
Pin driver (Mekugi Nuki): Small brass hammer with a screwed-in pin for removing mekugi.
Maintenance does not require disassembly, but if you need to remove the handle (tsuka 柄), replace the pins.

Handle with care to avoid injury.
1/ Use the microfiber cloth to remove oil from the blade. From the guard (Tsuba 鍔) to the tip (Kissaki 切先), slide the cleaning cloth over the back of the blade (Mune 棟), folding it in half to wrap both sides of the blade.
Lightly squeeze the cloth between thumb and forefinger to surround the blade from above (first illustration).
2/ Once the old oil has been removed, use the uchiko to lightly tap along the blade (second illustration).
3/ Use the cloth to lightly polish the blade and remove the powder, in the same direction as the first step (first illustration).
4/ Apply the oil along each side of the blade with the sprayer (or a very soft brush). The oil should be spread thinly and evenly, without excess (first illustration).
Be sure not to touch the blade before replacing it in its sheath (saya 鞘).
Clean the microfiber cloth with soapy water.

Legislation

Since September 6, 2013, new legal provisions stemming from the March 6, 2012 law have come into force. These new rules have strengthened criminal penalties against weapons offenders and introduced a new classification.
Katanas, swords, daggers and knives are now classified in category D. The purchase and possession of these weapons are unrestricted. In principle, they may not be carried or transported without legitimate reason. If transported, the weapon must not be "directly" usable. It must be securely packed in a case or container, preferably with a padlock or other protective system.
