Katana "Kouryuu" (興隆, flowering, blossoming, growth, development), bamboo and hummingbird decoration, Soshu Kitae forge, genuine hamon, hand sharpening
Sharp katana, Soshu Kitae forge (steels 1045 / 1060 / 1095), genuine hardening line (hamon 刃文), hand sharpening, with scabbard (saya 鞘) dark red inlay effect, delivered in a wooden box containing a maintenance kit, a lacquered stand and a protective cloth cover
I am a symbol of fulfillment. My scabbard (鞘 saya) is decorated with a bamboo branch that runs along the curve of the blade. It also features two hummingbirds. Bamboo, symbol of wood among the 5 elements of Feng Shui (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water), represents an ascending energy. It's linked to creativity and fulfillment.
The hummingbird exists only in America, but being the world's smallest bird, it is often depicted in Japanese paintings and illustrations. A symbol of love, birds also represent freedom, inspiration and opportunity.
So the blacksmith who brought me to life after many hours of toil, forging, clay heat-treating and hand-sharpening also wanted my frame to represent what we all aspire to: fulfillment.
