"Ketsui" sharpened katana (決意 resolution, decision), white saya decorated with Japanese motif
Sharp Katana with scabbard (saya 鞘) in engraved white lacquered wood, white ito and sageo, delivered in a yellow and black cloth-covered box with a wooden stand with protections and a cloth protective cover
My master-at-arms was always dressed in white, a sacred color that in the Shinto religion connotes the Divine. Long before Buddhism changed this attribution (white is the color of mourning and therefore of death in this religion), the samurai who carried me had chosen a mount for me that was also white. White was then reserved for the ninth and tenth ranks (out of 12, where the first is the highest). It was also the symbol of Gi (義), doing the right thing, rectitude, the ability to find the right thing to do in a situation. It is one of the six Confucian virtues¹.
That's why my saya (鞘 scabbard) is decorated with an illustration of a Japanese landscape that accompanies this quote: "Don't wait to do what you've decided" (思い立ったが吉日). It can also be translated as "the right day to do something is the day you decide to do it". This was my Master of Arms' guiding principle throughout his life. It's the symbol I've carried since my multi-centenary creation.
