"Yougan" sharpened katana (溶岩 lava), red and black 1045 steel blade
Sharp katana, blade painted red and black, with natural lacquered wood scabbard (saya 鞘), black sageo (下緒) and tsuka-Ito (柄糸).
It was in the lava of Mount Iwaki (岩木山, Iwaki-san) that I was forged. Erupting at the end of the XVIIIᵉ century (1782-83), the volcano destroyed many agricultural fields, but it also produced a unique ore. The carbon still plays with the red reflections of the Earth's depths. Although my steel has long since cooled, it retains the red veins of its volcanic origins.
I've seen little use as a weapon on the battlefield, but the mere act of taking me out of my saya (鞘 scabbard) would provoke panic in an opponent. Glowing lava or dried remnants of blood, the message was clear: anyone who got in my way would regret it before they died.
