"The Spirit of the Lake" sharpened wakizashi
Sharp Wakizashi with scabbard (saya 鞘) in dark blue lacquered wood and raised gold filaments, braiding (tsuka-Ito 柄糸 and sageo 下緒) in dark green, supplied with protective fabric cover
As with my "big brother", the "Spirit of the Lake" katana, the forest and water are my origins. The samurai I served chose to live on the shores of Lake Biwa (琵琶湖), Japan's largest lake. Often taking refuge in the forest covering the lake's largest island, Okishima (沖島), he lived for decades avoiding contact with the other inhabitants of the region. From this period, I've kept my scabbard with its singular relief evoking the meanders of life, as well as the vegetal color of my braids, tsuka-ito (柄糸) and sageo (下緒). My mount has been remade many times in accordance with the codes my master loved.
Today, several Shintō shrines ("the way of the gods" 神道) dot what was once his home. I still carry his prayers to the kamis (神), the divine forces inhabiting nature. I now need to find a new weapons master who can perpetuate this respectful spirit and, I hope, reform the daishō (大小 katana and wakizashi), the characteristic duo of samurai weaponry.
