This statuette embodies my samurai soul. From fearless warrior, I became a symbol. Accompanied by my katana and my metal and boiled leather armor, I have traveled paths, skirted mountains, explored caves and served many warlords. I've fought in many battles. All have been victorious. The breath of life left me when I had already retired from the military and martial tumult, in a temple surrounded by several tree-lined gardens. Every year, I waited for the cherry trees to blossom, a perfect illustration of our impermanence. From now on, I perpetuate the spirit of Bushidō, the soul of Japan, according to Inazō Nitobe¹.

¹ "Bushidō, the Soul of Japan" (武士道, Bushidō) is a work by Inazō Nitobe (1862-1933) published in 1900.

Samurai armour: art, strategy and unexpected innovations

Designed for mobility as much as protection, samurai armor has evolved profoundly. Originally, the ō-yoroi, developed as early as the Xᵉ century, combined metal and leather blades assembled in strips, laced by the thousands (sometimes 300 m of cords!) and protected by layers of lacquer. Made for cavalry, these armors were massive, weighing up to 30 kg, and ill-suited to infantry.
In the XVᵉ-XVIᵉ century, the arrival of Japanese Nanban-teppo muskets brought about a turning point: theokegawa dō, a cuirass made of riveted plates, supplanted the lamellar thanks to better ballistic resistance. To combine strength and flexibility, gunsmiths combined riveted plates, lamellae and mesh(kusari), deployed on the arms, thighs or collar, a sophisticated architecture combining targeted protection and lightness.
