Tsuchi kara, sharp tantō (土から, from soil, earth)
Tantō cutting edge with scabbard (saya 鞘) in black lacquered wood with reliefs (droplets), braiding (tsuka-Ito 柄糸 and sageo 下緒) brown (brown)
Legend has it that I was born from a lump of earth extracted from the sacred mountain, Fujisan (富士山). The master blacksmith who gave me life would have chosen the best ore to transform it, after weeks of hard labor, into a fine blade. Polished, razor-sharp, I was then entrusted, along with the identically mounted katana, to a samurai who took part in the Battle of Sekigahara (関ヶ原の戦い), in 1600. This is how I experienced this major military event in Japanese history, at the start of the Edo era (江戸時代 1600-1868).
Lost for decades, along with my "big sisters", the katana and wakizashi blades, rediscovered only a few years ago, we came back to life with the help of a young blacksmith who paired us with a new mount reminiscent of our origins, the earth and the humidity of its depths. As for our guard (Tsuba 鍔), made up of three war fans (Gunsen 軍扇), it also recalls its use as protection during sword fights.
