Yami, tantō sharpened black, damascened blade (闇 dark)

Tantō (短刀) sharp forged Damascus blade with wooden scabbard (saya 鞘), supplied with protective cloth cover, in wooden case

The characteristic waves of my laminated workmanship decorate my sides. Bent and folded upon itself, the steel from which I was forged takes on this signature that I honor. My black frame comes from the samurai I served for several decades. He wanted me to remain simple and discreet. For those who saw me out of my scabbard (saya 鞘), it was already too late. My master only let me see the light of day to maintain my steel or use me as a weapon. Finely honed, I took many lives, but none worth dwelling on, for my master-at-arms always acted as a faithful defender of the weak. I have never served evil purposes, and I will not allow my vocation to change. The next warrior I serve must swear an oath to that effect.

"Les samouraïs, histoire illustrée", Mitsuo Kure (translation: Carine Chichereau)

From the XIIᵗʰ century and for seven hundred years, the history of Japan was first and foremost that of the samurai. Originally, a class of modest soldiers under the orders of the Kyōto court; but the growing power of the provincial clans enabled them to quickly free themselves from the imperial court and at the same time create their own military government, which imposed itself throughout Japan.
Centuries of wars, rebellions, treachery and reversals of alliances saw samurai families fight fiercely for control of territories. And clans founded by ruthless adventurers dominated provinces, only to be swept aside by more powerful ones. Finally, three great chieftains emerged to unite the country under the command of a single lord: Oda Nobunaga, then his lieutenant Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and finally Tokugawa Ieyasu, who ruled all of Japan through battles, plots and massacres. This book, lavishly illustrated with prints, drawings and paintings, tells the story of these samurai, their weapons and their castles. It faithfully recreates a historical reality that is often poorly understood in the West.

Legislation

Since September 6, 2013, new legal provisions stemming from the March 6, 2012 law have come into force. These new rules have strengthened criminal penalties against weapons offenders and introduced a new classification.
Katanas, swords, daggers and knives are now classified in category D. The purchase and possession of these weapons are unrestricted. In principle, they may not be carried or transported without legitimate reason. If transported, the weapon must not be "directly" usable. It must be securely packed in a case or container, preferably with a padlock or other protective system.
