The Maciejowski Bible, created around 1240 for the future Saint Louis, is not simply a monument to sacred art. Each folio is teeming with details: crossbows with stirrups, caparisoned rams, riveted nasal helmets. The episodes of Joshua and Samson become 13th-century military chronicles, offering historians invaluable snapshots of European weaponry. As early as the 1960s, British archaeologist John Hewitt used it to reconstruct the actual range of longbows. Still preserved in New York today, the manuscript continues to fascinate archaeologists, illustrators, and HEMA enthusiasts, who interpret it as a tactical manual ahead of its time.

The Book of chivalry of Geoffroi de Charny codified honor, prowess and loyalty, while princely orders - the Garter in 1348, the Golden Fleece in 1430 - institutionalized this ethos. During the Renaissance, Castiglione transposed these standards into the figure of the courtier, the matrix of the "gentleman". Maurice Keen sees it as an enduring social ideal; Richard Kaeuper emphasizes its ambivalence, with chivalry both framing and exalting violence. In the long term, Norbert Elias interprets this evolution as a "process of civilization" imposing restraint, politeness and self-control. A heritage as fertile as it is pervasive, which has shaped our Western ways of being.

When bravery becomes law: the first code of chivalry

Long before the flamboyant tournaments, chivalry was born of a need to control the violence of Frankish warriors. Around 1100, the Chanson de Roland, an epic celebrating Charlemagne's companions, enunciated an ideal: to be loyal to God and to one's suzerain, to protect widows and orphans, to honor one's word, to loyally confront a worthy adversary. These "unwritten laws" were taken up by the clerics of the Peace of God movement, who preached that the sword should serve the common good. Little by little, the Church blessed the knighthood: in the nave of a cathedral, the young man swore an oath, received the sacred sword, and then, with a light flick of the hand, became a "knight". Thus was born the first code of warrior ethics in the West, the matrix of the romantic chivalry that would thrill the centuries that followed.

In medieval Europe, becoming a knight was not just a question of bravery: it was a veritable initiation rite, codified and sacred. The adoubement, the key moment in this social ascension, consisted in receiving a blow with the flat of thesword on the shoulder or the nape of the neck, symbolizing the transmission of honor and duty.
Prior to this ceremony, the squire had to spend an entire night in vigil, praying in a chapel, dressed in white as a symbol of purity. The knighthood itself was sometimes preceded by a ritual bath, confession and even fasting.
But did you know that the stroke of the sword was also a reminder of the pain of battle? Some ancient texts even mention blows so vigorous that they made the future knight stagger... A very physical way of saying: "You now belong to the caste of fighters. Prepare to suffer for your ideal.
