"Crusade" forged sword

Medieval fighting sword, octagonal pommel with red cross, throat blade, brown and black leather scabbard with adjustable shoulder strap

Taking up the cross was no trivial act for a knight. It meant taking part in a military expedition guided by faith and the Church. And so it was that I accompanied several knights to the Holy Land. Forged and reforged, my blade has lost none of its qualities. My pommel was decorated with a red cross at the end of what you now call the Third Crusade, at the end of the XIIᵗʰ century. The knight I was serving at the time chose to stay on to accompany the King of Jerusalem, Guy de Lusignan. And so it was that I passed through Cyprus, refuge for many Franks dispossessed of their fiefdoms in Palestine.
The scabbard that protects me today is not the same as it was originally. I've gone from being a warrior to a symbol. But the next master-at-arms who uses me will be able to restore me to my former vigor, as well as the appropriate cope for my guard.

"History of the Crusades: The secret underside of the Crusaders' epic

As chronicler of the First Crusade, Guibert de Nogent helped to rewrite the Gesta Francorum (or Gestures of the Franks and other peoples during the pilgrimage to Jerusalem). A witness of his time, and with the rigor for which he is renowned, Guibert de Nogent delivers a breathtaking description of this major event in the history of mankind, when, in the name of God, Western civilization was plunged into obscurantism and conflict between religions ...see more

"History of the Crusades, Jacques Heers

The word "crusade" is an anachronism, since it appears discreetly in the XIIIᵉ century and only takes on its current meaning in the XIXᵉ century. Contemporaries did not see themselves as crusaders, and their motivations were different from those we attribute to them.
The First Crusade, preached by Pope Urban II at the Council of Clermont in 1095, was above all a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, mixing knights with a multitude of pilgrims, men, women and children ...see more
