For centuries, I've accompanied men into battle. Whether foot soldiers or knights, I'm there to protect them. Parrying blows, cushioning blows, dulling edges... I make no distinction. Hand-assembled by master blacksmiths, sometimes handed down from father to son through inheritance, I complete the main protection for combatants: hauberts or chain mail.

A suit of armour... and yet we're running!

The image of the "knight-canet" is tenacious, but misleading. War armor from the late XVᵉ century weighs on average 20 to 25 kgThis is the equivalent of a modern bag, with an even distribution across the chest, hips and shoulders. Visit hinge plates (bladed elbow pads, knee pads, lamellar fauld/skirt) allow the bending trunk and limbs. Experimental archaeology tests show that a fighter in armour can run, climb, get up and deliver effective blows; speed losses remain modest compared to an unarmored infantryman. Conversely, some armors tournament are heavier, as they are designed for specific movements and not for mobility in the field. Result: far from being a hindrance, the armor optimizes the protection/mobility ratio for battle.

Haubergier, manufacturer of hauberts and chain mail

In the thirteenth century, in 1268, under the reign of Louis IX, the Provost of Paris, Étienne Boileau (1200-1270), drew up the "Livre des métiers", a register setting out the statutes and obligations of a number of professions in the city.
A master haubergier gives his opinion.
