Knight Templar: sword, dagger, piece of armor

Hugues de Payns was a knight from Champagne in the early 12th century. Around 1119, he founded a group of knights in Jerusalem tasked with protecting pilgrims. His goal was not glory, but to organize a lasting service. He transformed a fragile brotherhood into an order recognized at the Council of Troyes in 1129. He acted with discipline, faith, and strategic sense. He favored rules, loyalty, and long-term development. This is how he founded the Order of the Knights Templar.
With him, we talk less about legend than about responsibility and foundation.

Contrary to popular belief, Friday the 13th was not considered an unlucky day in the Middle Ages. Admittedly, Friday had strong symbolic significance in Christian tradition, as it is associated with the crucifixion of Christ. As for the number 13, it evokes the twelve apostles gathered at the Last Supper, plus Judas, the figure of betrayal. The arrest of the Knights Templar on Friday, October 13, 1307, is often cited to explain this fear. However, no medieval text shows that this event immediately and permanently associated this date with bad luck. Historians agree on one essential point: the specific fear of Friday the 13th appeared late in history. It developed mainly in the 19th and 20th centuries, particularly in the Anglo-Saxon world, through popular literature and the press. In the Middle Ages, the calendar was punctuated by liturgical feasts, agricultural cycles, and religious obligations, rather than numerical superstition. The Friday the 13th that we fear today is therefore more a product of modern culture than a direct legacy of the medieval past.

In the 11th century, even before the official founding of the Order of the Temple, some of the knights who would form its core took part in the First Crusade and passed through Constantinople. At the imperial court at that time was one of the most educated women of her time, Princess Anna Komnene, future author of the Alexiad.
In her work, she accurately describes these warriors from the West... their discipline, their ardor, and sometimes their recklessness. She observes them as they swear allegiance to her father, Emperor Alexius I, and is struck by their keen sense of honor. Several chroniclers indicate that some of them would, a few years later, belong to the founding circle of the Knights Templar.
This testimony is unique; it reveals the perspective of a Byzantine princess on those who would become the most influential military order of the Latin Middle Ages.

The myth of a buried hoard obscures a far more prosaic and powerful reality. From the XIIᵉ to the XIVᵉ century, Templar wealth stemmed primarily from donations, estates and regular income: cens, mills, vineyards, tolls. Cartularies and inventories after 1307 detail property titles, royalties and stocks, far more than gold coins. Papal bulls confirmed their tax privileges on the land they developed, proof of a strategy of agricultural and domanial exploitation. The knights were only a minority; many of the brothers managed these estates, keeping track of income and expenditure with a keen sense of efficiency. Basically, the Temple's "treasure" consisted of charters and acres of land... a patrimonial power that explains their weight in the West better than any sealed chest.

At the beginning of the XIIᵉ century, the "Poor Knights of Christ" were only a handful for a long time. Guillaume de Tyr notes that "after nine years, they were still only nine". Housed by the king in the al-Aqsa mosque, mistaken for the "Temple of Solomon", they took their name from it. With no rules of their own and no red cross, they depended on the Patriarch of Jerusalem, living on alms and escorting pilgrims. In January 1129, the Council of Troyes, strongly influenced by Bernard de Clairvaux, gave them a 72-article Latin Rule, based on Benedictine and Cistercian practices, and assigned them the white cope. The red cross did not appear until 1147, at a chapter attended by Pope Eugene III. A modest genesis... for an enduring legend.

In January 1129, the Council of Troyes established the primitive Rule of the Temple, a Latin text appended to the minutes that organizes the common life, vows and discipline of a fraternity of repentant knights, more monastic than seigneurial. In the same intellectual vein, Bernard de Clairvaux composed his treatise De laude novae militiaegiving theological meaning to the "new militia". Ten years later, on March 29, 1139, the bull Omne datum optimum of Innocent II established the Order's legal status: direct protection by the Holy See, exemption from tithes, own chapels and burial grounds, Order priests, election of the Master reserved for the interior, prohibition on imposing an external superior. In practice, the Knights Templar no longer reported to bishops or local lords; they became a militia Christi operating on two registers, contemplative and military. This Council + Bull diptych founded the model for the religious-military orders of the XIIᵉ century.

At the heart of the Crusades, two military orders dominated: the Knights Templar, founded in 1129, and the Hospitallers, established in 1113. Although united by faith and combat, their relations oscillated between cooperation and rivalry.
On the battlefield, they fought side by side, as at the Battle of Montgisard in 1177, when the Hospitallers, led by Roger de Moulins, and the Templars joined forces to defeat Saladin. However, tensions arose, notably in 1179, requiring the intervention of Pope Alexander III to establish a truce between the two orders.
The rivalry culminated in the Battle of La Forbie in 1244, when a Christian coalition including Knights Templar and Hospitallers suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of Ayyubid forces. The defeat marked a turning point, permanently weakening the Christian presence in the Holy Land.
Despite their differences, the two orders shared a common destiny. Following the dissolution of the Knights Templar in 1312, their assets were transferred to the Hospitallers, reinforcing the latter's power.
