XIIᵉ century, under the sun of Jerusalem.
They crossed the sea, faced fatigue, thirst, hunger, doubt to finally arrive on this coveted land. Faced with the urgency of battle, they will respond, for that is their destiny, their vocation.
Red as the cross on the mantle of those they serve or black as the ink of the writings that will tell their story, their scabbards beat on the hip of the knights they accompany.
And that seal on their pommel, so fair, so committed, so recognizable.
To protect and to serve. The Order of the Temple had more than just a warlike mission. They were also there to protect, dissuade or reassure in those passionate times.
Today, they're waiting to bring a little of that protective vocation to your daily life. Whether adorning a wall or a mantelpiece, they'll be there to remind you of history and inspire a bit of chivalric spirit in your life.

Cross medicine in Acre: when Templars and Hospitallers exchanged ointments and knowledge with Arab physicians

The de facto capital of the kingdom after 1191, Acre was home to ports, markets and the houses of the orders. The vast hospital quarter, which has been excavated and can now be visited, welcomed the sick and pilgrims; the Order employed health professionals and relied on an abundantly oriental pharmacopoeia (spices, resins, syrups). The Templars also had infirmaries dedicated to getting brothers-in-arms back on their feet quickly. Documentation (hospital statutes, regulations) shows a structured care system; research has revealed a convergence of practices with learned Arabic medicine (dietetics, compound ointments), indicating daily exchanges between Latin practitioners and the city's Arab physicians. The anecdotes of Usāma ibn Munqidh confirm that they consulted each other, sometimes contradicting each other... but that they did meet. In short, in Acre, medicine was also a common language.

History & Symbol

Templar sword decorated with the Templar seal, with pair of medieval gauntlets

Templar sword and seal

It's unlikely that the seal was used to decorate the pommel of the Templar knights' swords. Indeed, in the Middle Ages, the seal was the principal means of authenticating a document. As well as acting as a signature, it guaranteed the confidentiality of a message, and certified its origin.

The Templar seal has two sides: the first representing the Dome of the Rock; the second the symbol of the order (two knights on a single horse, surrounded by the phrase "☩ Sigillum ⫶ Militum ⫶ Xpisti").
