Templar steel helmet with brass cross
Large helmet from the High Middle Ages XIIᵉ - XIVᵉ centuries in steel and brass, supplied with padded protection.
Some people think I'm just an invention, whereas my twin is on display in the Berlin Museum. A feature of crusaders' military equipment in the late Middle Ages, I protect the knight's head in the same way that a tank claims to protect its occupants today. Placed on a quilted layer that protects the head tenfold, from blows as well as from my own inertia, I am today more a symbol than a functional piece of armor. For while the Crusades are no longer relevant - the geopolitical and religious context having evolved considerably - the values of chivalry that I represent, beyond their military value, are timeless. Hospitality, generosity, clemency, largesse... these are the first ingredients in the cement of any humanist and sustainable society.
