Kintsugi (金継ぎ), "Golden Samurai" katana, decoration
Collector's Katana with screen-printed black saya (鞘) (samurai and calligraphic kanjis), brown braiding
My master was nicknamed the "Golden Samurai", in reference to his resilience and ability to transform his wounds into new passes at arms. He lived between the XIVᵗʰ and XVᵗʰ centuries, during the period when Japan gave birth to this art of repairing broken objects by highlighting his scars with gold powder.
Symbolically, Kintsugi embodies a philosophy that associates the object's past, its history - with any accidents it may have experienced - and its renewal, its capacity to be reborn. And it's true that my master has risen many times from the battles he has waged. He wasn't always victorious, but his technique and knowledge were refined over time, creating his legend. My scabbard (鞘 saya) is thus decorated with several calligraphic kanjis and the silhouette of my samurai master, enveloped in a golden yellow aura. My role today is to remind people that "the only failures are those from which you learn nothing".
