Laser engraving uses a concentrated beam of light to remove layers of material, creating precise markings or patterns. The laser works by vaporizing or melting the targeted surface of the material.
The scabbard of a katana, called "saya" in Japanese, is generally made of lacquered wood to provide robust protection for the blade. The scabbard protects the katana blade. It is designed to allow the blade to be drawn smoothly and quickly.
Inspired by Japanese landscapes, this original composition brings together several elements characteristic of the Land of the Rising Sun, including Mount Fuji (富士山), the highest point in central Japan. The proverb "Don't wait to do what you set out to do" (思い立ったが吉日, Omoitatta ga kichijitsu) urges action. Laser engraving provides a remarkably fine rendering of the motif.
