Kabuto (兜), samurai helmet
Samurai helmet (XVIᵗʰ - XVIIIᵗʰ centuries), with stand and varnished wooden case
I served only one master, a samurai known for his bravery on the battlefield but also for his gentleness in times of peace. I protected him by giving him a mysterious aura of fear and respect. He fought many times, in single combat and in the army of the Shōgun (将軍 general) Tokugawa Ieyasu. On numerous occasions, my master tried to pass on some of his compassion to the new Shōgun, but it was to no avail. The latter's warrior upbringing considered it a weakness. Thus, for example, tens of thousands of soldiers and samurai were killed for taking part in the defense of Osaka Castle (大坂城 / 大阪城 Ōsaka-jō, 1614-15).
A protective helmet, I'm also a vector for the frightening image of these warriors. My Menpō (面頬 or Mempo, facial armor) wears a grimace to scare off enemies. This also makes it possible to smile discreetly.
