"Heavenly Dragon" decorative katana (Cloud Dragon)

Collector's Katana with black saya (鞘) decorated with a screen-printed dragon, tsuba (鍔) dragon, tsuka-ito (柄糸) and sageo (下緒) white.

Legend has it that I was forged in the belly of the Celestial Dragon. The master blacksmith, wanting to save his son who had been eaten alive by the animal, took the same route. After finding his son, he set out to find the materials swallowed by the monster to forge a blade. After several weeks of toil, in a stench worthy of the underworld, the blacksmith succeeded in creating me and disemboweling the dragon to escape with his son.
Since then, my mount has carried the Celestial Dragon on my guard (鍔 Tsuba) and scabbard (鞘 Saya). But the legend doesn't end there. Born in the animal's body, I'm eternally linked to it. So I can call on him and his strength to discourage the most ambitious. I choose the fighter I serve and pass on my ability to call on the Dragon's strength. Invisible to human eyes, the Celestial Dragon watches over the dwellings of the gods, but not only.

History & Symbol

The Japanese dragon kings

Japanese dragon (illustration CharlieNati, Adobe Stock no. 329821225) Japanese folklore recognizes four dragon kings:
. The Celestial Dragon who guards the dwellings of the gods,
. The Spiritual Dragon governs wind and rain, but can also cause floods,
. The Earth Dragon who cleans the rivers and digs the oceans,
. And the Dragon Guardian of Treasures, who protects precious metals and stones.

Dragons' breath transforms into the sulfur from which water and fire originate. Legends describe Japanese dragons as being able to expand or contract their bodies. They can also transform themselves or make themselves invisible.

A magnificent painting of the Celestial Dragon (or Cloud Dragon) decorates the walls of Tenryu-ji temple in Kyōtō. Dreamt up by a priest of the time, the illustration was drawn in 1899 by the artist Suzuki Shonen. Unlike their Chinese cousins, Japanese dragons have only three claws.
