I remember the battlefields. But is the self-confessed victor really the last man standing among the corpses of his adversaries? For millennia, men have fought for ideas, ideals, beliefs or simply - foolishly - for power. Yet the true destiny of blades, large and small, is to protect. Indeed, the founding principle of the Order of the Temple was to protect pilgrims. It was only by misusing their military strength that they became so powerful and dangerous that the King of France took advantage of the weakness of their legitimate protector, the Pope, to eradicate them. Had they retained their original role, they might still be with us. To serve and protect must be the raison d'être of knights. That is my true vocation.

Le Beaucéant: the black & white flag of the Knights Templar

In battle, the Knights Templar advanced behind a two-tone standard: white at the top, black at the bottom, sometimes adorned with a red cross pattee. Called Beaucéant, it symbolized Templar duality: "gentle to Christ's friends, terrible to his enemies", reports Jacques de Vitry (c. 1220). Each squad defended its banner, the loss of which led to expulsion. At the cry of "À moi, beau sire! Beaucéant to the rescue!", the Templars launched their charges, using the psychological impact of this emblem to break through opposing lines.
