When Tolkien built his legendariumHe doesn't embroider haphazardly. As a philologist, he draws on Beowulf and Old English poetry to shape Rohan, right down to the lament that picks up the motif ubi sunt. Nordic myths permeate his imagination: the One Ring speaks to the tradition of Andvaranaut, while the figure of Smaug is reminiscent of the dragon from Beowulf. At the same time, the Finnish cycle of the Kalevala inspired the dark fate of Túrin, modeled on Kullervo. Even modern warfare comes to the fore: the Marshes of the Dead owe something to the Somme... but Tolkien also claims a debt to William Morris and his medieval romances. December 17, 2027 marks the long-awaited return to Middle-earth with The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. Directed by Andy Serkis, who also reprises his iconic role as Gollum, the film will explore the events between The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring.
The plot will follow Gandalf and Aragorn on their quest to find Gollum, after the discovery that Bilbo possessed the One Ring. This period, little explored on screen, promises to reveal new aspects of Tolkien's universe.
