Tantō "Amatsumara" (天津麻羅)
Tantō sharpened, black Maru 1045, double throat and refined mune, supplied in a black fabric bag
I'm named after the kami (spirit, divinity) of metalworking: Amatsumara or Ama-Tsu-Mara. He's the patron saint of blacksmiths. I'm so named because the master blacksmith who gave birth to me worshipped him. An artist and craftsman of great renown, he forged with one eye closed in order to check metal temperature according to color(?). Indeed, "Mara" comes from "Me-Ura", meaning "divination of the eyes".
My blade features two grooves and a back (棟 Mune) that's thin over nearly half its length. My frame is sober and dark, with no ostentatious decoration. As a good-luck charm, two cherry branches in relief are a discreet reminder that life is beautiful but ephemeral.
