"Jundo" decorative tachi (純度 purity)

Collector's tachi (飾り太刀 kazaritachi), dark red saya (鞘 scabbard) and white braiding

The dark red color of my saya (鞘 scabbard) is a reminder of the blood I've spilled. The white purity of the cloth covering it and my tsuka (柄 hilt) demonstrates that the samurai I served for years remained pure. Indeed, these were not duels fueled by an oversized ego, but only the hand of Justice. This symbol of purity can be seen today in the flag of the Land of the Rising Sun.
My samurai master tirelessly toured Honshū (本州), Japan's main island and province. I accompanied him and his horse on all his travels. The latter was not protected by armor, unlike his Western counterparts, but he guided us for nearly 3 decades, an exceptional feat. My master was looking for a leader worthy of service. His tireless quest was not crowned with success. On the contrary, he was hunted down and fought for the simple fact of wanting to remain faithful to his commitment to fairness and justice. My master is no longer of this world, but the quest continues...

"Les samouraïs, histoire illustrée", Mitsuo Kure, Carine Chichereau

From the XIIᵗʰ century and for seven hundred years, the history of Japan was first and foremost that of the samurai. Originally, a class of modest soldiers under the orders of the Kyoto court, the growing power of the provincial clans enabled them to quickly free themselves from the imperial court and, at the same time, create their own military government, which imposed itself throughout Japan.
Centuries of wars, rebellions, treachery and reversals of alliances saw samurai families fight fiercely for control of territories. And clans founded by ruthless adventurers dominated provinces, only to be swept aside by more powerful ones. Finally, three great chieftains emerged to unite the country under the command of a single lord: Oda Nobunaga, then his lieutenant Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and finally Tokugawa Ieyasu, who ruled all of Japan through battles, plots and massacres. This book, lavishly illustrated with prints, drawings and paintings, tells the story of these samurai, their weapons and their castles. It faithfully recreates a historical reality that is often poorly understood in the West.
