Depths of the oceans or depths of the soul?
Legend has it that a dragon haunted the Kantō plain (関東平野, Kantō heiya). Most often taking refuge in the depths of the Ocean, the animal reigned over a vast territory on the island of Honshū (本州), Japan's largest island. The inhabitants, landlocked between the Japanese Alps and the Pacific, feared him for his ability to delve into the deepest recesses of his victims' minds. What he uncovered there came to the surface and drove mad those who came across the mythical animal.
To defeat him, my samurai master decided to decorate his weapon with the dragon's image. When it was his turn, he defeated him, wounding him with his own appearance as well as with my sharp blade. The beast disappeared into the ocean forever. Since then, I've been credited with warding off unpleasant spells and evil spirits.
