My samurai master had a particular fondness for large spears. He particularly enjoyed training with his favorite Yari (槍), so much so that he decorated my scabbard with a print depicting him carrying this nearly 4-meter spear. I have to admit that on the battlefield the Yari is particularly effective, as it can hit an enemy from a good distance, even mounted on horseback.
Today, his spear is no more, but I perpetuate his memory as well as that of my samurai master.

The yari (槍) is a Japanese spear up to 6 meters long, with a straight shaft and blade. Different blades or points could extend the shaft. It was the samurai's weapon of choice, used by battalions to slice through horses' hocks (like the Naginata 薙刀) and unseat their riders.
