Sub-Machine Gun MP40
Collectible militaria replica of the WWII German Maschinenpistole 40 submachine gun (moving parts, non-functional weapon).
Nicknamed MP40, a contraction of my real name, Maschinenpistole 40, I'm a machine pistol chambered for 9 × 19 mm Parabellum ammunition. A German automatic weapon, I was mainly used between 1940 and 1945. The Allies nicknamed me "Schmeisser", after the German weapons designer Hugo Schmeisser, who designed the MP18 used in the First World War. This is actually a misnomer, as my design was the brainchild of Heinrich Vollmer, and the Erfurt arms factory ERMA (Erfurter Maschinenfabrik Geipel) for which he worked. But it's true that this design was strongly inspired by the MP36 developed by Schmeisser.
More than a million examples were produced until 1944. My first versions suffered from a design flaw. As it was impossible to lock the breech, a shot could accidentally go off when the gun was hit. In 1941, a locking device was added to complete and secure my use.
I'm not just a historical weapon. After Indochina, Kosovo... I'm still in use in Syria.
