I was forged centuries ago to pierce the armor of our adversaries. Long and sharp, my blade is not sharpened to preserve and strengthen it. In those days, armor protection plates were impervious to sharp swords. Crossbow bolts could pierce them, but thrusting swords were particularly effective on the battlefield, during cavalry charges or hand-to-hand combat.
In the heart ofArduenna¹, the master blacksmith who gave birth to me wished to recall my origins by choosing the ochre color of burnt mineral pigment. Siena, the Italian city whose name I bear, has long been known for the unique color of its earth. But it's also available naturally in the Ardennes, Germany, Cyprus, England...

¹ Arduenna is the name - probably of Celtic origin - of a forest in and around the Ardennes massif. It also refers to a Celtic goddess, Arduinna.

Type XV chivalric swords: the answer to plate armor

At the heart of the Hundred Years' War, knights no longer swore by sharpness alone. To neutralize the new plate armors, blacksmiths designed thechivalric sword of type XV (Oakeshott typology): very rigid diamond blade, tapered point, straight guard and wheel pommel. Weighing barely 1.2 kg, the weapon is one-handed, but its geometry favors the estoc; at mid-blade, the combatant can " half-sword " and transform the sword into a miniature dart. The Fiore dei Liberi manuscripts(Fior di Battaglia, 1410) already show this technique in legal duels. Between 1350 and 1500, the type XV became the knight's emblematic "second sword", capable of slipping through the slightest seam of armor, elegant, deadly and resolutely modern for its time.

Legislation

Since September 6, 2013, new legal provisions stemming from the March 6, 2012 law have come into force. These new rules have strengthened criminal penalties against weapons offenders and introduced a new classification.
Swords, daggers and knives are now classified in category D. The purchase and possession of these weapons is unrestricted. In principle, they may not be carried or transported without legitimate reason. If transported, the weapon must not be "directly" usable. It must be securely packed in a case or container, preferably with a padlock or other protective system.
