The history of the katana: exploring Japanese culture

The katana, a symbol of Japanese culture and martial arts, is not just a simple sword, but a reflection of Japanese history, philosophy and craftsmanship. In this book, we delve into the fascinating world of the katana, exploring its origins, tracing its evolution over the centuries and understanding its importance to Japanese culture right up to the present day.

The history of the katana goes far back into Japan's past, to a time when the sword was not just a fighting tool but also had spiritual significance. The earliest ancestors of the katana date back to the Heian period (794-1185), when Japanese warriors began using swords resembling the present-day form of the katana.

Authentic samurai armour
The Musée Japonais in Castelnau-le-Lez, near Montpellier, is an intimate but very beautiful private collection, full of surprises. It's no coincidence that some of the museum's samurai armor is featured in the TV series "Un si grand soleil", broadcast on France 2. Its creator, Francis de Hèbles, 6ᵉ Dan of Aïkidō, passionate about feudal Japan also created "L'École des samouraïs".
